Working as a nurse and mother for more than two decades, the “empty nest” invited an examination of new goals and renewed purpose, as my youngest “child” left for college. I returned to graduate school to pursue a career in counseling inspired by a curiosity for family dynamics, parenting styles, personal narratives and people of all kinds. With the opportunities and experiences of my own life story, I wondered if I might be able to make a difference in the lives of others by sharing in their stories and life journeys. I knew the privilege it was to enter into the unexamined, the vulnerable, the sacred and the creative places of another’s life and I wanted to offer hope and healing to those interested in knowing themselves better or expanding their world view.
Together with unconditional positive regard and trauma informed care, I found the heart of the therapeutic relationship and my theoretical orientation. The field of counseling taught me that by honoring our own personal biography, we can also encourage an evolving narrative or autobiography to emerge, written and rewritten with greater insight, authenticity and compassion. If we allow ourselves to examine and explore the thoughts we believe and the stories we tell ourselves, for example, we can look at our circumstance in different ways by changing our perceptions. I have learned that the life cycle challenges growth and development at every age, and resilience of all kinds will be required. My hope as a counselor is to embrace the goals of the client and to nurture their work in building a life they imagine.
In my own life, I cherish family time, friendships, faith, optimism, professional development, and an active lifestyle. I love movies, travel, reading, shopping, free time, decorating, organizing and nurturing. I have too many heroes to count from Spiderman to Pope John Paul II, but I am most inspired by people who bring goodness and vision to the world. I have lived an extraordinary life filled with ordinary moments and I am filled with gratitude for every day.
